My goal is to teach every individual student and to meet every student's needs; to guide students to become independent learners; and to prepare students as responsible and self-reliant individuals in society. I discovered my passion for education as an undergraduate at Western Washington University when I began taking courses in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). As soon as I was in the classroom working with elementary students, I realized that teaching was my calling. Upon graduating with a minor in TESOL, I moved to Mexico and worked in a bilingual school, teaching second and fourth grade, both in Spanish and English. After a couple of years, I decided to return to the United States to further pursue my education. I was accepted to Loyola Marymount University as part of the graduate program in Bilingual Elementary Education. I graduated in May of 2016 with a Master of Arts, a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, and a BCLAD Credential. Most recently, I worked at a charter school as a third grade teacher in a full inclusion classroom.

Jennifer DeLeon, Credentialed Bilingual Teacher
I am a native Spanish speaker. I attended elementary, middle, and high school in Redondo Beach, CA. My parents are from Guatemala. At a young age my family instilled in me the importance of embracing both my American and Guatemalan culture. I would dress up for Halloween but also participate in Posadas around Christmas time. I grew up speaking both Spanish and English. As a bilingual/biliterate model, I understand the critical role of heritage – language and culture.I obtained my Bachelor’s degree from CSU Dominguez Hills in Liberal Studies with an option in Spanish. I obtained my BCLAD in Spanish and teaching credential this past spring. I completed my student teaching in Lennox and South Los Angeles. I worked with students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade dual immersion classrooms. I also worked with preschool-aged children in Compton, California through Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc., an AmeriCorps program. This opportunity allowed me to experience the critical role of early language and literacy skills development in young children as well as the importance of collaboration with other teachers.
